Limericks

Jam
I stuck my finger in the jam
Say! I should spread it on my ham
It tasted so good,
Well of course it would,
Next, I’ll have to try it on lamb

Moola
Moola is the thing I want to have most,
With moola lots of parties I could host
Bwa ha ha ha ha!
Give me lots of moola!
With moola I’d buy a yacht on the coast!

Why oh why did I sit near the Y?
At lunch I sat there to eat my pie,
Why did I do this?
Why did this I not miss?
Why oh why, why oh why, oh my.

Zara
Zara is my very good friend
Really soon the world she will end
She’s a hufflepuff
But she’s really tough
Time with friends she tends to spend.

A series of unfortunate events
 The baudelaires: Violet,klause and sunny,
Their life is really really quite crummy,
Near a lumber mill,
Olaf is evil,

They just need a daddy and a mummy.

Quatrains

Quatrains:

Together
Into the sunset we will sail,
From the land we will bail,
As night falls we will be together,
The sea foam is as soft as a feather

The island that we will own is full of tropical fruit,
The island is quite big not quite minute,
All the animals big and small we will love forever more,
We will grow old never again to see war

When we die our story will be told,
So sit back and let it unfold,
Our story  will be remembered forever,
How we lived forever together…

Forbidden love
Two lovers meet at midnight,
Atop a mountain high,
A foreign princess and an english knight,
To leave, to say their forbidden goodbye

To greet each other in war,
To love each other more,
To break the law,
To let their love be tore

But true love is never broke,
When to souls are meant together,
Their love do not provoke,
Their love will not be tied with a tether

To meet again, each other to see,
They wondered how it happened,
But they do not know if two souls are meant to be,

Their love will help them find each other, their love was not abandoned.

Senses poems

Sensus poems:

The playground with the hill
The rickety old swing was creaking in the wind,
I looked up to the top of the slide that seemed to go on forever,
I was at the top of the hill at the playground , in the smell of the dew on the grass I was fastened,
The blood rushing to my head as I rolled down the hill felt warm and never would I leave, never!

Christmas
You know the jolliest time of the year is near when you can smell the roast in the oven,
The presents are under the tree and you see grandmas that she wrapped delicately, a sweater  she had knitted,
The  prickly christmas tree scratches me as I walk by,
The spice from the gingerbread house tickles my tongue,
The happy carolers sing there melodic song that lifts everyone's spirits,
Merry Christmas everyone

The haunted house
As I entered the house for a dare the cool air embraced me,
I breathed in the dust, making my throat taste like coal, a musty feeling filled my lungs,
Already creeped out I turned to go but I heard a creaking sound coming from behind me,
I turned to see a scared face, blood dripping from both eyes,
He smelt like sweat and blood,

I ran away he grabbed me, I felt I might come to a sticky end

Triplets

Triplets:

Harry Potter
Harry potter defeated voldemort at first,
His luck is kind of cursed,
But in this book you’ll become submersed.

Halloween
Halloween is kind of scary,
Halloween is really eerie,
 Do not enter the cemetery.

Triplets
A triplet has three lines,
Each line rhymes,

Each rhyme rhymes three times.

Bacon
Bacon sizzles on the pan,
Women eat it and so does the man,
Sadly you can’t get it in a can.

Couplets

Couplets:

Room Six
In room six our teacher is miss Down,
When you are in room six you will never frown!

Christmas
Christmas is the time of year when everyone is filled with cheer,
Christmas is really big this holiday is never meer.

Dumbledore
There once was an old wizard called Dumbledore,

He defeated grindelwald far far before.

Mixed Media - Visual Arts

You hold the future in your hands

In Term 2 our Visual Arts focused was on Mixed Media. We finally finished our pieces of art at the end of the term. We started off by creating two hands, most of us copied our own hands as templates. One hand represents our past and the other hand our future. We used lots of different materials and symbols to make our artwork as well as exploring a range of different techniques with watercolor paint. This is my art work.

GSS Book Week 2019

Book Week

Room 6 was hungry for books during our book week. We had a whole week celebrating all things books. We had author visits from Stu Duval and James Russell. Stu presented workshops on storytelling, cartooning and writing.  James shared his books and told us stories. We did lots of cool book week activities in class like making dust jacket covers, wanted posters, bookmarks and story cubes. Finally our favorite day arrived, Friday. We got to dress up as our favorite characters and partake in the literacy treasure hunt.  Overall book week is a fantastic week every year. Room 6 LOVES BOOK WEEK!

Here are some photos from our time:

The water cycle

The Water Cycle
I am learning to inform my audience through an explanation
By Maggie

Have you ever stopped while it is raining and wondered where the rain comes from? Well, rain is an important part of something called the water cycle. The water cycle is made up of three main parts, evaporation, condensation and precipitation, rain is part of precipitation. Did you know we can’t make new water? The freshwater on Earth is billions of years old because of the water cycle! Yes, that's right the water cycle recycles water! Right now you could be drinking water that dinosaurs splashed around in! The water cycle helps water travel across the world. Each stage is as important as the other because without just one of these there would be NO water cycle! Evaporation is where it all begins.

Evaporation is how water becomes water vapour and forms clouds, a very interesting process. The sun heats up water until it is over 100 degrees celsius causing it to evaporate and turn into an invisible gas called water vapour. The water vapour rises up to the sky and meets other water vapour. When there is enough water vapour they connect forming clouds and become visible. Evaporation is an amazing and important process that we could not live without.

Condensation comes after evaporation. Condensation is the process in which the gas form changes back to the liquid form, the reverse of evaporation. The water vapour in the clouds changes to liquid or ice when it is in the sky because of the freezing cold temperatures. Since it is water it is almost impossible for the air to hold it leading us to precipitation.

When the air can’t hold the water anymore it falls. This process is called precipitation. The water falls as either rain, snow, sleet or hail. Water that soaks into the ground is called groundwater and water that falls into big bodys of water is called streamflow. Sometimes water builds up in a underground hole, this hole is called an aquifer.

The water cycle is made up of three main parts evaporation, condensation and precipitation. We need the water cycle and we are lucky we have it. Thanks to the water cycle we still have the same amount of water on Earth that we had millions of years ago.  In conclusion, the water cycle is an important part of our life and we need to work together to stop wasting water, because remember there will never be any more water.

Water Care

Water, water everywhere! On Friday of week 6, we were lucky to have Sally from Water care come to teach us more about the water. We did a drama activity and experiments. Firstly we examined the process that water goes through to become drinkable water in our households. Our drama was based on the process that the water to be cleaned. We were the water going through each stage. We had so much fun as we ventured around the school. Once we learnt how water is cleaned we then had to try and clean the dirty water ourselves. We had to create a filter system in partners. We had to do four different tests for our experiments. We experimented with a range of filters to try and test which filter system was the best. My group was in the top three best filters.

Cross Country

Cross Country

Good Shepherd School had been busy training for cross country this term and finally the day arrived.  In week 6 we all arrived at school in our running gear and had our house colors painted onto us. We were eager and ready to go and win house points.  Overall the race was long and required a lot of stamina, but we were prepared. Here are some pictures from our races.

Samoan language week

This week was Samoan Language Week. In Room 6 we learnt a lot about Samoa and the Samoan culture. We watched Cultural Hub clips about the Samoan alphabet, animals and body parts. Did you know that the Samoan alphabet has only 17 letters?
We did a hunt on facts about Samoa, we then searched the classroom for clues to complete our Samoan puzzle. We had experts teaching us greetings and phrases, our experts were Matila, Remy and Rosa.

Measuring in Square Meters

Measuring in Square Meters

Image result for measurement drawing metres
Every Thursday Room 6 have been learning about area and how to measure small and LARGE areas.
This week we measured the classroom. We got in to groups of three or four and tried to figure out how big the area was. The most popular suggestion was to horizontally measure the classroom and then to vertically measure the classroom. After we got the two measurements we multiplied them.

Saint Joseph's Day Tabloid Sports

Tuesday 19th March was St Joseph’s Day Feast Day. The whole school attended mass to celebrate the leadership Saint Joseph showed. Saint Joseph is also special to our school because Saint MacKillop and the Sisters of St Joseph were inspired by Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph is also the foster father of Jesus. The following day, the whole school came together to celebrate with fun tabloid sports in our houses. We all got to play so many fun and exciting games. Thank you to our leaders who prepared this.

My Accident Story

My Completely Accidental Accident Story

February 2019

Maggie
I am learning to entertain my audience through a recount.

The muffled whispers of Room 9 could barely be heard, but if you had been there you would have known they were excited. It was P.E time and we were waiting to know what we were going to be doing. Suddenly the screams and shouts of the joyous Room 9 broke the silence in the air. We were playing netball! Those that loved netball cheered.

We all got into teams of two, obviously I was with my best friend Jiwoo. Soon after we realized, we didn’t have a ball yet! Dun, dun, duuuuuuuuuun! I was panicking! There was only two balls left! One was good and one was nearly flat! There was one more team without a ball! This would be the race of my life!

I ran as fast as I possibly could. They were gaining on me! Ah! I wasn't going to make it then, I won! I had got It! I had started running back…

Crash I fell backwards landing on my arm. Suddenly pain shot through my body as I landed on the cold hard concrete, the worst pain, the most sincere pain I had ever felt in my life. I was speechless. All I could say was ouch.

I sat on the gravely concrete for what seemed like forever, but was probably only a few seconds. Finally I got up, my arm throbbing and continued to play, until it became to much to bear. Eventually I found out I had a fracture, and boy did it hurt.

Swimming Sports

Swimming sports

Room 6 had a wonderful day at swimming sports. When we all went to the turf we split up into our houses. Thank you Sharyn and parents for helping us with the non competitive swimming and competitive. Also thank you parents for coming along and supporting your children. Good shepherd students thank the teachers very warmly, as every year as they set up and prepare this event for us. I’m sure that every student enjoyed the event. I saw everyone compete with my own eyes and they all did well. The people who lost don’t have to be sad because they should be grateful they got a swim in the warm weather also because there’s always time and effort to improve.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

Today was Ash Wednesday. We went to church and sang some hymns, got the ashes on our foreheads, sung happy birthday to a little girl starting school on her birthday! We then went up and got a blessing.

We did make an attempt to keep our ashes on our foreheads, but that was a fail due to swimming and itching it off. We had a good day and hope everyone else did to. During the lent season we have to remember to pray, almsgiving and helping others.

This year I am focusing on being the peace keeper of my family.

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday

Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday. We all had a great day in room 6. The festivities started with the burning of the ashes on the turf. This was a new and exciting experience that not many of us had seen before.

Later on during Religious Education we learnt more about Shrove Tuesday and Lent. People used to get rid of all their luxury items such as flour, sugar, butter, eggs and milk by making pancakes. We were even able to enjoy some pancakes of our own. We all thought it was a great start to lent and we are looking forward to the Lenten season as we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Shine Week

Shine Week

A sea of orange flood Good Shepherd School on Friday the 8th of March. This week was shine week. We raise money to help people whose lives are affected domestic violence. In support we all wore orange clothes and brought a gold coin donation to help the charity. Here are some pictures:

Ko Maggie Shaw tōku ingoa (your name)

Nō reira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa.

(Therefore, greetings to you, greetings to you, greeting to us all).

Good shepherd charism

Did you know the reason Good Shepherd School named their syndicates Connolly and Sheridan? Connolly and Sheridan were the names of the first two sisters that worked at Good Shepherd School when it opened. That is just one of the fun facts we learnt this week when we explored the charism of our school. The charism of our school is the flavour of our school, it is what makes us Good Shepherd School. Over the week we looked at the history of the school and unpacked the visual Image of the Good Shepherd Cross with the values, scripture, feast days and the St Mary MacKillop sayings. We unpacked the values and why we have those values. In groups we identified what each value looked, sounded and felt like before making up definitions. Another new fact I learnt was that st Mary Mackillop founded a group called the josephites also known as the brown joes. The Josephites also founded  our school.

Piece of the puzzle

I am piece of the puzzle

In Room 6 we are all a piece of the puzzle. There are 29 students and we each complete our puzzle. Without one of us we would not be Room 6. During the second week of school (once the year 6 were back from camp) we spent time learning about each other and completing our piece of the puzzle. We learnt that we are all different and unique made in the image of God. But we also learnt that sometimes people need a little helping hand to make learning fair. Check out our pieces of the puzzle in Room 6 Foyer to learn more about each of us.

“It’s always the small pieces that make the big picture.”

leadership role

This year I am proud to take on the role of being part of the school council.  I look forward to this role because it will improve my leadership skills.

Maori posters

After learning about the Treaty of Waitangi, the year 5's made Maori pastel art taking inspiration from the Maori culture and their learning to capture some of the designs to make them. This is my Maori pastel art:

Treaty of Waitangi

During week 1 we were learning about the Treaty of Waitangi. The Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand's founding document. The name is taken from the place in the Bay of Islands where it was first signed, on 6 February 1840. New Zealand recognise this special day with a public holiday. The Treaty of Waitangi is an important agreement that was signed by representatives of the British Crown and Māori in 1840. The purpose of the Treaty was to enable the British settlers and the Māori people to live together in New Zealand under a common set of laws or agreements.

Here is a picture of our factual posters:
